Top 3 Sites with Free Birth Charts

From Molly Hall, About.com
Your Guide to Astrology.

These days it's easy to find your birth (or natal) chart online. With a birth chart, you're able to see the sign and house position of all your planets. You can also use the chart to study the relationships between the planets, called aspects.

Here are three sites that offer high quality charts. You'll need your birth information -- date of birth, place of birth and the time. You can still get a chart without your exact birth time, but it won't set the rising sign, and house positions.

1. Astrodienst
Astrodienst offers professional quality birth charts and the site is just a great overall resource for astrologers and beginners alike. Look for Chart Drawing/Ascendant for the basic chart. Your birth data is saved and available each time you go to the Astrodienst site from your home computer. This makes it easy to go back as you're ready to look at other kinds of charts, or compare your chart with someone else's (known as synastry). http://www.astro.com/

2. Cafe Astrology
Cafe Astrology is a great site with engaging interpretations. Once you've put in your data, you'll have access to the chart, and the interpretations to go with it. It offers insights on both the strengths and weaknesses of the planet sign/house positions and aspects. But the first thing you'll see is a table chart with your birth planets and their signs, which is a fast way to size it all up rather than finding them on the wheel. http://www.cafeastrology.com/

3. Astrolabe
Like the other sites listed here, Astrolabe doesn't make you jump through hoops to get your birth chart. Just input the data and the chart comes right up in seconds. You can even save the chart to your hard drive. The chart is followed by interpretations of each of your natal planets beginning with the Sun sign. http://www.alabe.com/

Budget Yoga

From Ann Pizer,Your Guide to Yoga.
About.com

How to Do Yoga on the Cheap?

Taking yoga classes from an experienced instructor is the best way to begin and sustain a yoga practice. But at $15-$20 a pop, quality classes don't come cheap. If you have found that yoga classes put a strain on your wallet, here are some ideas for doing yoga on a budget.

1. Buy Classes in Bulk
By committing to a class card good for 10 or 20 yoga classes, you can save some real money. Most studios offer a substantial discount on class cards, which can bring the price of a class down to as low as $10. You will need to have the money up-front for the class card, and be a regular student to ensure that you attend all the classes you have paid for before your card expires.

2. Invest in Your Own Yoga Mat and Water Bottle
Two dollars for a mat and a dollar for bottled water may not seem like a lot, but it will quickly add up over time. With yoga mats available for purchase for a little as $20, it doesn’t take a math whiz to figure out how many rentals it takes to equal your very own mat (uh, 10?), which, by the way, will also be a lot cleaner than a communal studio mat. And carrying your own water from home not only saves money, but helps reduce waste too.

3. Do Karma Yoga
The truly broke, such as students and the unemployed, need yoga too! Those with flexible schedules (i.e., more time than money) can often trade work for classes at yoga studios, especially if they have been regulars in the past. This type of work, called karma yoga, may include simple cleaning, front desk work, carpentry, publicity, or graphic design, so you might even get something for your resume out of it. Don't be shy about asking your studio if they do karma yoga; many studios are more than happy to trade classes for services they value.

4. Seek Out Inexpensive Classes
Many yoga studios offer community classes at a discounted rate. These classes are often at off-peak hours, so you will need a flexible schedule for this one. Community centers, university extension programs, YMCAs and gyms are also places where yoga may be offered for less. The quality of the teaching will vary quite a bit, so it's best to go with a teacher you already know, or at least make sure the teacher is Yoga Alliance certified. In warm weather it gets easier to find free yoga classes in parks and other outdoor spaces.

5. Practice at Home
Doing yoga at home along with a video or audio download is definitely more cost-effective than attending classes, though the trade-offs are boredom and missing out on the advice of a teacher. You can even find free yoga videos and audio on the web (search free yoga). If you go this route, try to treat yourself to a class every few weeks to keep yourself inspired and on the right track.

Yoga for Stress Management and Relaxation

from About.com

Yoga has long been known to be a great antidote to stress. Yoga combines many popular stress-reducing techniques, including exercise and learning to control the breath, clear the mind, and relax the body. As Yoga becomes increasingly popular, more and more people are discovering the benefits this ancient practice brings to their stressful lives.

Exercise
Hatha Yoga is the physical practice of Yoga postures. There are many different types of hatha yoga: some are slow and more focused on stretching, others are fast and more of a workout. If you are looking to relieve stress, no one yoga style is superior, so pick one that meets your level of physical fitness and personality.

Any exercise will help relieve stress by keeping the body healthy and releasing endorphins, natural hormones that make you feel better. Yoga also relieves stress through stretching. When you are stressed, tension is stored in the body making you feel tight and often causing pain. The intense stretching of yoga releases tension from problem areas, including the hips and shoulders.

Breath Control
Pranayama, or breath work, is an important part of any yoga practice and one that translates well to life off the mat. At the very least, yoga increases your awareness of the breath as a tool for relaxing the body. Although breathing is an involuntary act (you have to keep doing it to stay alive), you can choose to regulate the breath. Just learning to take deep breaths and realizing that this can be a quick way to combat stressful situations is amazingly effective.

Clearing the Mind
Our minds are constantly active, racing from one thought to another, spinning possible scenarios for the future, dwelling on incidents from the past. All this mind work is tiring and stressful. Yoga offers several techniques for taming the monkey mind. One is breath work, as outlined above. Each breath is tied inextricably to the present moment; you are not breathing in the past or the future, but only right now. Focusing on each inhale and exhale to the exclusion of other thoughts is one way to clear the mind, It is also a basic meditation technique. In addition, the performance of yoga poses, or asanas, also acts as a form of meditation. The poses are so physical, and have to be done with such concentration, that all other thoughts and worries are put to the side, giving your brain a much-needed break.

Relaxation
Each Yoga sessions ends with five to ten minutes spent relaxing in corpse pose - savasana. While this enforced relaxation can be difficult at first, eventually it serves the purpose of a total release for both body and mind. Savasana transitions you back into the world feeling refreshed and equipped with the tools to combat stress in your daily life.

Don't Throw Out Your Old Computer -Recycle It!

Cosmically Free Hoodie Tunic Earth Friendly eco organic cotton.
from Trend Micro

Earth Day is April 22, and that means it's time to think again about what you can do to help the environment. People are talking more and more about e-waste—old or broken electronic equipment—and the hazards it can pose to our great outdoors. We all rely on cell phones, computers, monitors, and other gadgets in our daily lives, and at some point they all break, wear out, or need to be upgraded. When that happens, you shouldn't just toss old equipment in the trash. Many electronics contain toxic and non-biodegradable materials that shouldn't go in the landfill. Fortunately, you've got several earth-friendly options for getting rid of your old computer. Although some PC recyclers offer assurances that your hard drive will be wiped clean of old data before it's passed along or dismantled, it's a good idea to take your own precautions first. Before you give away or recycle your computer, remove all the data from your hard drive and any removable media such as disks, PC cards, flash drives and CD-ROMs.

If your computer is less than five years old, you can probably donate it to a school or local charity. That results in even less waste than recycling! But if you decide to go this route, it's generally best to contact a local refurbisher who works with charitable organizations. They can make sure your computer is usable and running up-to-date, legal copies of software. And they're trained in proper disposal of e-waste. Ultimately, you'll save your favorite charity a lot of time and headache by working with a refurbisher.

If your computer is more than five years old or if it doesn't work, many computer manufacturers and independent companies run recycling or trade-in programs. Apple, Dell, Gateway, Hewlett Packard, and IBM/Lenovo all have their own recycling programs. In addition, several major recycling companies can take your old or broken computer and make sure it's disposed of properly.

NEW MOON IN ARIES

from Yogitoes
This ARIES new moon, April 5, at 8:56 P.M. PDT, encourages us to take a leap of faith, reminding us that the more we hold on to the past, the harder it is to grasp what lies
in front of us.

In Ancient times, much ado was made about THIS new moon as it truly represents the first new moon of the astrological New Year (that being the Spring Equinox) and of Spring.....which absolutely is NEW BEGINNINGS!

The energy of an Aries New Moon is that of the sacred masculine, inviting courage, passion, boldness, and action!

NOW is the time to do your spring cleaning, get rid of that which is blocking your energy.....and truly take the time to plant seeds of your hearts desire...
What changes must be made?
What is calling you forward?
What seems a little scary...but you just can't get it out of your mind?

Be BOLD...
Be WITH your fear and take action anyway!
You will be rewarded for your acts of courage!

What is called for now is innovation rather that coercion, strategic action as opposed to impulsiveness, and stewardship instead of destruction!

Remember...."the test of courage comes when we are in the minority" (Raulph W. Sackman)

By practicing the following yoga pose this month, it will assist you in building courage, strength and clarity!

YOGA ASANA: Pincha Mayurasna (Peacock Feather Pose / Forearm Balance)
COLOR: SKIDLESS in RED (root chakra for grounding and abundance)

COLOR INTENTION - RED:
RED is the element of FIRE, which is important for all things living.

Without heat or fire, the world would have no motion or activity and be paralyzed with cold, not to mention dark, as there would be no sun.

The color RED stimulates the nerves, blood, and senses.

It activates circulation, exciting cerebro-spinal fluid and sympathetic nervous systems.

RED rays produce "AGNI" or "TAPAS" inside the body which vitalize and energize us, clearing congestion and mucus.

RED is a color that insinuates POWER, and yet is the color of the root chakra, which represents grounding and abundance.

Our intention in using the color RED can be to ignite the fire within, drawing the ego back into the self, and finding a place of grounded calmness within the blazing fire.

Pincha Mayurasana
(pin-cha my-your-AHS-anna)
pincha = feather
mayura = peacock
AKA Forearm Balance

Susan Nichols, Yogitoes Founder
STEP 1. DOLPHIN POSE

Start at the wall in Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana). Your fingertips should be touching the wall. Drop down onto your FOREARMS, so they are parallel to each other and shoulder width apart. (If you have a hard time keeping your elbows in, you can use a yogitoes ySTRAP... see below for info.) This may be enough for you. It if is, stay here and work Dolphin Pose, pressing the thoracic spine in, preparing for balance.

STEP 2. FOREARM BALANCE AT THE WALL

With your gaze between your hands, bend one leg and try kicking up, using the wall to balance. When you feel comfortable try kicking both legs up, pushing through the heels to straighten. Lift through your core and draw your shoulder blades toward one another, as you press downwards through your palms and forearms evenly. Focus on drawing your front ribs towards the hip points, reaching your tailbone toward your heels, and moving the navel to the spine.

STEP 3 PINCHA MAYURASANA

Pull one foot away from the wall at a time for full Pincha Mayurasana. Your head should be off of the floor; hang it from a spot between your shoulder blades and gaze ahead at a drishti point. (the yogitoes dot on your SKIDLESS can serve as your drishti here). Stay in the pose for 10 to 15 seconds. Gradually work your way up to 1 minute.

STEP 4 REST in child's pose for at least a minute. Always rest completely at the end of an active inversion practice, as you may become lightheaded.

MODIFICATIONS WITH YOGITOES PROPS...

to use the ySTRAP: measure from shoulder-head to sternum. Adjust accordingly, as this is your "shoulder width". Slip the strap over both arms so it is just above the elbows. Using the ySTRAP around your arms will prevent splaying of the elbows - allowing you to engage in your shoulder girdle more and helps provide a stable foundation for balancing.

INTENTION: Pincha Mayurasana, like the peacock is beautiful and fierce... As with many inversions, Pincha Mayurasana helps us to face our fears and regulate the mind. At the top of peacock feathers are what look like open eyes, reminding us to look within to find the strength and calmness necessary for this pose.

BENEFITS: This heat-building pose strengthens shoulders, back and upper arms, as well as reverses the blood flow to rejuvenate and cleanse the body. It may also reduce tension in the neck and shoulders, open the chest and work the abdominals.

CONTRAINDICATIONS/CAUTIONS: Be cautious with any neck, back, or shoulder injuries, or if you have high blood pressure or headaches. Always listen to your body, as it knows you best!

a butterfly story: One day, a caterpillar got very hungry. He ate and he ate and he ate and he couldn't understand why, but went right on ahead eating. Once he was nice and fat he began to spin a kind of shell around his body but still, he didn't know why. He was inside this strange, dark place for a very long time feeling confused and scared. Until, all at once he realized that there was no point in worrying. He should find patience and calmness as he sat there. Well, as soon as he stopped thinking, the cocoon began to split open and the light poured in and he saw that he had become a beautiful purple winged butterfly!

a flamingo story: A long time ago, flamingos stood on both legs and were very hungry all the time! The clever fish would see the shadow of two long skinny legs in the water and quickly swim away before the flamingo had time to catch them for dinner. One day a very smart flamingo saw a shadow of a tree and thought to himself, 'Well since shadows don't show color, maybe if I try standing on one leg, the fish won't see the bright pink and think that I am a tree. Then they won't swim away and i can have a nice big lunch!" Well, you can probably guess how right that smart bird was, since today flamingos have big bellies full of fish and always stand on one leg like trees.

a frog story: Once upon a time, a frog was hopping along when he fell into a pail of milk. The sides of the pail were too high and much too slippery for him to climb out. Frightened for his life he kicked and paddled for hours. Even when he was so tired he thought he would faint, he kept going. All of a sudden, he felt something harden under his feet. He had paddled so hard, he had turned the milk in to butter. Proud of himself for not giving up, he happily jumped out, washed the white butter off his little green body and continued on his way.

Let's Talk About Yoga Some More

Tree Pose = Vrksasana

from Not Quite Sure

This is the summer of tree pose. Everywhere I go--A's yard, the deck, the crazy hot/power yoga class--I am the tallest, strongest, steadiest tree I have ever been. It could mean something about my physical and mental state, or it could just be a matter of good floors.

I realized, on my birthday, when I went to the crazy hot/power yoga class, that every yoga class I've ever taken had been taught by a woman. I realized this, of course, because a man taught the class.

The big yoga gurus, the Rodney Yees and Baron Baptistes, are all men.

Do with that what you will.

My ideal yoga teacher remains my first yoga teacher, in some kind of classic the-first-is-always-the-best kind of way. But she was. It was prenatal yoga and she would walk around the room adjusting us, making the most minute corrections that transformed the poses. I never worried about whether I was doing things right, because I always knew she was watching and would catch me if I wasn't and, most importantly, help me to learn. Also, she wasn't so into the clap-trap side of yoga (and here I betray my yoga priorities). I'm sure that class is why I survived ten hours of induced labor without an epidural and walked a mile a week after M was born by c-section.

In Red State Capital City Suburb, my yoga teacher read us passages from gurus and led us through visualizations and I waited impatiently for actual poses. She didn't correct us much either, but she did do the yoga along with us, and when I was pregnant with E, she adapted all her poses and series for me, and it was Red State Capital City Suburb where there weren't many yoga options, so I got used to her.

I haven't found many yoga teachers who truly help you, the individual you, not just the group you, to get your poses right. But most of the yoga teachers I've had in Town do the poses with us, so we can feel one with them and watch what it is to be right (OK, I know, "right" is not the goal of yoga, and in fact undercuts the yoganess of the yoga , but I'm talking about doing poses effectively, not perfectly, or competitively) (shh, we won't talk about the competitiveness of yoga, because we do not participate in such a thing, ever) (besides, our yoga clothes are nowhere near hip enough to even approach the level of competition).

The yoga teacher at the crazy hot/power yoga class did not do the yoga with us. He corrected maybe two or three students during the entire class. He walked around the room spouting clap-trap, when he wasn't mumbling mumbo-jumbo.

The students all had perfect yoga outfits and much yoga paraphernalia.

I'm actually not such a slouch myself on the yoga outfits and paraphernalia front--I was wearing shorts, because who wants to wear black yoga pants when it's 90 degrees outside and 100 inside? oh yeah, the hip yoga students do; but I did have my regulation tight sleeveless top and my very own yoga mat and my bottle of water and my ponytail. But I was old, so much older than those hip yoga students, and I was OK with coming down from my half moon into child's pose because my leg was tired, and I was OK with doing bridge instead of wheel, though then I did do one triumphant five-breath wheel, my longest ever (not that that matters...).

But here's the thing: I had a great class. The clap-trap, mumbo-jumbo though it was, reached me, occasionally. I mean, it really is true that brave people are scared too, they just move forward anyway. That explains why everyone says I'm brave when I know that really I'm terrified. And if you hold on and push through, you can stay in half moon on the other side and do wheel for five whole breaths. And while I wouldn't do crazy hot/power yoga every day--I'm nowhere near hip enough--it's definitely worth visiting the land of hip yoga every once in a while.

And you should have seen my killer tree pose.

Salon, Spa & Style

Amy George
Richmond.com

A massage is a great way to pamper yourself, but it can also be a healthy treat for your body. However, many people hesitate to schedule a massage because they are insecure with their body. Others have heard jokes about "happy endings" or worry about massage etiquette. Finding a skilled massage practitioner that you can trust is not always simple. For this month's "Salon, Spa, and Style," I visited Blades Day Spa for a massage.

Technically, a massage is the therapeutic application of pressure to body tissues. This is most often the muscles, but it also includes the tendons, ligaments and the lymphatic system. The Virginia Department of Health Professions requires anyone who provides professional massage services to become a Certified Massage Therapist. This requires 500 hours of training as well as successful completion of an examination administered by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.

There are literally hundreds of styles of massage. One of the most commonly practiced and popular styles is Swedish Massage. Unless you specifically visit a practitioner of another style like Shiatsu, Thai Massage or Rolfing, most aspects of the massage will reflect the Swedish style. Light oils are used to reduce friction on the skin. While the client typically disrobes as much as he or she is comfortable, only the body part being worked on is exposed.

Massage therapists work in several different settings, including medical facilities, sports rehabilitation clinics, salons and spas. You can locate a massage therapist in your area at massagetherapy.com. A competent massage therapist will not be offended if you ask about certification or the styles that he or she practices.

Once you have found a massage therapist and scheduled an appointment, there are several more things to keep in mind. Before you go:

DO: Drink lots of water, both before and after the massage. Stimulating your lymphatic system and circulation is said to cause the body to shed toxins. Dehydrated muscles also can't respond as well to the therapeutic benefits.

DO: Shower and shave. I like to use an exfoliating glove instead of a sugar scrub because it doesn't leave any residue on my skin.

DON'T: Eat a big meal, or anything that might not agree with your stomach. Once, I scheduled a massage for the week before a friend's wedding. I hadn't eaten meat in several months, but enjoyed the prime rib at the rehearsal dinner without a thought. This was very bad timing for my massage the next morning.

DON'T: Apply scented lotions, perfume or spend a lot of time doing your hair. Let the oils and aromatherapy do their work. Likewise, your hair will probably be a bit rumpled and may have gotten a bit of oil in it, depending on the style and length.

DO: Be ready to communicate with the massage therapist. This includes not only your health history and general fitness level, but also any specific issues like aches and pains, lingering injuries or disabilities.

DO: Allow a bit of time before and after your massage. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before your appointment. Give yourself a window of at least an hour to enjoy the after-effects of a wonderful, relaxing experience.

I scheduled my massage at Blades Day Spa, a Willow Lawn destination since 1997. The spa has been recently remodeled and now includes salon, spa and laser skincare medi-spa services. It was a Saturday afternoon and the waiting area was populated by many women trying to schedule a walk-in appointment. Surprisingly, the person who welcomed me at the reception area, Angie, turned out to be my massage therapist. She offered me a glass of water, and I began to fill out the information form. This was my chance to communicate with the massage therapist about my preferences and health. I was offered a chance to use the restroom before I was shown to the room where I would receive my massage.
